Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with just Claire and Fanny. We find out that Fanny has stuck by Claire’s side the whole time, and she shares some information about her past.

Mrs. Cunningham comes in search for medical attention. She’s dislocated her shoulder. Fortunately, Claire is able to quickly get her shoulder in place, but she wants Mrs. Cunningham to stay just to rest and to make sure everything is okay. This gives the two women and Fanny some time to talk.

We learn that Captain Cunningham believes that he’ll die in seven years. He truly believes this, and Claire notes that it could lead to him taking some risks in the run-up to that. This is something that worries Claire and Jamie because they know he could raise a militia. Claire makes it clear to Mrs. Cunningham that Jamie won’t let Cunningham raise a militia, although Mrs. Cunningham says that it won’t be up to Jamie. Cornwallis wants to get rid of the rebels.

This chapter also sees how the bond between Mrs. Cunningham and Claire has changed. When Mrs. Cunningham sees that Claire is all alone for some time, she offers up some of her son’s lieutenants to do some of the chores. She knows that Claire can’t do it all herself.

We also get a conversation about the third floor of the house and all the noises that the house makes. Mrs. Cunningham is curious about why a third floor is needed, and Claire makes it clear that it’s a refuge for the tenants. Claire knows what is coming.
