For All Mankind brings us a what if story. What if the Soviets got to the moon first? When is For All Mankind Season 1 set?

Apollo 11’s success and the troubles with Apollo 13 effectively ended NASA. While there were some explorations, nothing was quite as big as getting a man on the moon. Ron D. Moore decided to tell us another story.

He brought us into a world where the Soviets got to the moon first. They put the first man on the moon and then followed with the first woman on the moon. That led to a different type of space race in the series.

The fourth season continues the story very soon, but we’re heading back to where it all began. Just what years is For All Mankind Season 1 set in?

For All Mankind Season 1 timeline

The series opens in 1969. It’s just ahead of what would have been Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Instead, we watch as the Soviets put the first man on the moon.

From there, NASA tries to figure out what its going to do next. It’s even worse when the Soviets put the first woman on the moon. It’s up to NASA to find a way to get ahead.

Throughout the first season, we watch as NASA brings us the first female astronauts, gets women into space, and searches for ice on the moon. We also get some scary moments, especially toward the end of the season, remind us of just how dangerous space exploration (still) is.

By the end of the first season, we reach the end of 1974. Apollo 24 and 25 head out to the moon to retrieve one character who was left out there alone.

However, you will want to stick around for a post-credit scene at the end of the finale. There is a scene that takes place in 1983, hinting at the time jump to come in For All Mankind Season 2.
