The chapter starts with John and Hal going to meet with Cavalier Saint-Honore. It turns out this man in Percy Wainwright, which surprises the two Greys. Both men also struggle to maintain their calm demeanor. It’s clear that a lot happened between everyone.

John can’t handle the tension any longer so he leaves to walk in he garden. Percy joins him, although John doesn’t want him there. This is when Percy calls John “Buttercup,” and makes it known that he knew it was John’s secret code name when John worked for London’s Black Chamber.

Percy decides to tell John that he was Monsieur Citron, the opposite number in the French version of the Black Chamber. Is Percy still working for French intelligence? That’s something Percy is very vague on, suggesting that he is.

It’s clear that Percy is up to something in this next part. He shares that he is planning on leaving but he’s looking to prepare the ground. He also thanks John for saving his life once and then asks for a favor that isn’t all that dangerous. John refuses to engage in this and walks off.
