The future of Rebus was put in jeopardy earlier this year, as Viaplay chose to halt production of shows in the UK. What does this mean for the series?
Outlander‘s Richard Rankin was the one to land the role of Rebus in the new series adaptation of the books. However, there are fears that the series will now not go ahead. Viaplay announced that it would stop production of shows in the UK, due to content not being as viable as some other locations.
So now, there are questions about whether we’ll get to see the series. It had already filmed before the news broke. The series would have still been going through post-production, with a planned 2024 release.
Will Rebus still happen on Viaplay?
It’s hard to say what the plan will be for the series at this point. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to just let the project go unaired. All that hard work is then for nothing.
Of course, if this does happen, the series is in good hands with others that have been shelved after production. We just have to look at the Batgirl movie and Snowpiercer Season 4 to see how shows and movies are just dropped, with the companies often getting to write the production off through the taxes.
We’ll be sure to keep an eye on things right now. The thing for Viaplay is that it’s not affected by the current strike action. Most of the shows are European written and based. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions don’t have any part of them, so while people may want to stand in solidarity, they will still need to produce the shows or risk losing their jobs—just look at how House of the Dragon has kept filming and what the actors were told.
The series wasn’t set to arrive on Viaplay until 2024. The news may have involved only shows that hadn’t already been produced. There is still a chance we’ll see the series, but it will be a one-and-done production.
