On the surface, The Way Home doesn’t look like something that connects to Outlander in any way. It makes a surprising suggestion to our Droughtlander list.

If you overlooked The Way Home to get through some of Droughtlander before, you’re not alone. This Hallmark Channel Original Series doesn’t initially look like it has much connection to the world of Outlander.

After all, it’s a story about three generations of women reconnecting with each other. Where’s the romance or the history? There is a surprising element to the story: time travel.

What is The Way Home about?

The series follows three generations of women. Kat moved away from her hometown when she was just a teenager, and since then she’s had Alice. Alice has never met her grandmother, Del, but that’s all about to change.

As Kat divorces and loses her job, she needs to return to Port Haven. This is a chance to reconnect with her mother, give her daughter a chance to know her grandmother, and uncover past secrets. It’s more than just that, though. There’s a chance to right past wrongs.

It turns out that there’s a time-travel element to the story. Time travel gives them all a chance to right the wrongs and make changes that could heal the rifts. Can you change the future?

Why watch The Way Home as an Outlander fan?

The series itself is well-written. It’s a beautiful tale that involves some strong women. Kat wants to provide for her daughter, but she also needs to accept help at times. That means returning home, something that she never thought she would do. To be honest, do any of us think that we’ll go back home even under good circumstances?

The time travel element is certainly something that will draw in the Outlander fans. No, there’s no Jamie Fraser for any of the women to meet. However, there is a chance for the three women to connect in ways they never could before. Healing in the past can bring new growth.

Of course, we get the idea of changing the past. It’s nothing on the scale of preventing Culloden or making sure the American Revolutionary War happened, but sometimes the smaller events have the most impactful of changes.

The series did end with a bit of a cliffhanger. The good news is there will be a second season.
