Droughtlander suggestions: Check out The Umbrella Academy
There are some great TV shows out there that involve time travel. The Umbrella Academy is one of them, and it’s perfect for Droughtlander.
There are some excellent TV shows out there. As you work your way through Droughtlander, you’ll want something that offers something similar to Outlander. Of course, it’s impossible to get absolutely everything that Outlander offers in one series. Nothing is the same, and that’s the fun of entertainment.
One of the elements of Outlander is time travel. Well, there are plenty of shows that incorporate that, and The Umbrella Academy on Netflix is one of them. There’s also a graphic novel series that the TV show is based on written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerald Way.
What is The Umbrella Academy about?
In 1989, multiple women suddenly give birth at the same time. The mysterious thing is that they weren’t pregnant at the time. None of them.
Sir Reginald Hargreeves decides to adopt seven of those children, and he forms what becomes known as The Umbrella Academy. His seven children are only numbered—although they are later given names. They each have an ability. Well, all but, it seems, one of them. Vanya doesn’t have abilities at all, and she has always felt like the outcast of the group.
In the first season, the siblings are estranged. They have to find a way to work together when they realize that an apocalypse is happening. Can they prevent the world from coming to an end?
Over the course of the seasons, we’re taken back through time as more apocalypses happen that the siblings need to prevent.
Why watch The Umbrella Academy as an Outlander fan
This series is nothing like Outlander. That’s why I love recommending it. There are so many times that people say “well, that’s not like Outlander” when discussing a romance show—when that show isn’t even trying to be the same. So, why not offer something completely different? Step outside of your favorite genre, and go inside new characters.
The series brings us a look at 1963. We see racism and the push for changes to civil rights. There’s the lead-up to JFK’s assassination, but that’s not an even that the siblings need to stop. Something else is going on at the same time. It’s all about another apocalypse.
We get a chance to see how bonds can change. There are romantic elements to the story, but they’re not the main focus. For Allison, there’s a focus on getting back to her daughter. For Five, there’s a focus on saving the world and taking down a bigger organization. For Klaus, it’s about love, loss, and seeing dead people.
Each character has his or her own development and growth. Yet, they also have their group storyline, and they also get to see what happens when you change something in history. You see, sometimes, history can be changed.
The Umbrella Academy is available to stream on Netflix.
