Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire and Roger heading to the Cunningham’s cabin. Claire is there to keep Mrs. Cunningham distracted while Roger talks to the captain. There are a lot of questions Roger has.

On the way, Roger and Claire talk about Christmas. Roger would like to celebrate it since it’s clear the children have celebrated it in the 20th century. It’s not tradition for the Scots, but Claire would like to do it. However, she needs Roger not to talk about Santa Claus to Captain Cunningham.

There are a few topics of conversation off the table, including the Beardsleys. Their unconventional relationship is the topic of conversation the rest of the way. When they get to the cabin, they find out that Mrs. Cunningham is by the river. Claire goes there while Roger goes into the house.

Roger and Cunningham talk about preaching and Roger notes that while his wife and her family are Catholics, he is not. Also, there are Freemasons on the Ridge. This is when Roger finds out that Cunningham is a Mason. This is a great opportunity as they could rebuild the cabin that was used as a meeting house together and take turns preaching. Roger knows that this will give him time to learn more about Cunningham.

Back with Claire, she finds Mrs. Cunningham bathing naked in the river. There’s no need to talk to her right now. Claire walks away, although pockets an emerald that she finds on the ground.
