Why wasn’t the White Sow in Outlander?
There is one mischievous character missing from Outlander. It’s all about the White Sow, and Matt B. Roberts explains why she’s missing.
When the Frasers moved to the Ridge, fans were excited to see a certain book character appear. The White Sow is a major player in a lot of situations. And she certainly seems indestructible. In fact, the White Sow seems to help to lead Jamie and Young Ian to the situation with the gold.
So, when she was only mentioned and not seen in Outlander Season 4, fans were disappointed. When she wasn’t even mentioned after that, it’s been even more disappointing. Why not give us the humor that this character brings?
Matt B. Roberts explains the missing White Sow in Outlander
You’ve heard the phrasing “don’t work with kids or animals.” This is one of those situations where the phrasing is the reason. While the show has brought in kids and a few animals here and there, not all animals are that easy to work with. At least a dog and horse can be trained—although if you talk to some cast members on another show, they’ll give you all sorts of stories about horses getting up to things—and cats are pretty easy to manage for the odd moments they are needed.
The White Sow was another matter. Just look at how intricate some of the moments would have been to film. During an episode of the official Outlander podcast, Roberts explained that it was going to be too hard to put the scenes together, especially the way they are in the books. This is an animal that Jamie describes a lot, and in one of those descriptions, it’s all about “hellish Noises”
“So the White Sow got its own little pen on Fraser’s Ridge. I don’t know where it is, but it’s somewhere and the White Sow is living a happy life.”
It turns out that Rollo doesn’t always listen, either. If you see shots that are waist-high and remain that way, it’s likely due to a dog on the ground doing what dogs do and it’s easier to just keep him out of shot instead of making him stick to the script.
