Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire realizing where Jamie has gone. While she didn’t tell him anything about the man, she knows that Jamie would have asked Jenny. It’s Jenny who has told Jamie about the man at the Beardsley Trading Post, and now Jamie has gone off to kill the man.

There is nothing that Claire can do, so she heads to her garden. There is talk that Malva’s ghost haunts the place, but Claire hopes that the young girl and her unborn baby are at rest. To help with that, she cuts her wrist slightly and allows the blood to drop.

Jenny comes to Claire with news that Rachel’s waters have broken. The two women get to Rachel to find Young Ian white as a sheet. Claire allows Fanny to stay to watch and help. Germain, who also wants to watch, is sent off to get Young Ian drunk. He can do that.

Before Young Ian leaves, he gives Rachel the hide of an unborn wolf cub. He hopes that the baby can be wrapped in this. I love this moment. It’s part of Young Ian’s past with the Mohawk and with Rollo. I think that it’s the hide of an unborn wolf cub is symbolism in Malva’s unborn baby that Ian once thought was his and how Ian and Emily’s daughter was wrapped. There is hope that death can bring new life.

And so, it’s up to the women of the Ridge to bring this new life into the world.
