4. William saving the Hunters

William and the Hunters travel north together. There is some discussion of religion, and I adore that the Hunters aren’t pulled into it. They’re not going to divert from their views, but they also don’t push those views onto William. They want to agree to disagree, and I love them more for that.

Along the journey, they end up taking up the hospitality of a couple of strangers. They may have wanted to avoid that house, though. It ended up with the husband and wife trying to kill William and the Hunters. Fortunately, William had woken from the rat stew with stomach cramps, so he was alert enough to save the Hunters.

Something that I adore is how William steps outside after all this. It’s not for his stomach cramps but for the realization that he killed a man. He could talk about it, but now it’s happened, and not just on the battlefield.

3. Roger talks to Jemmy

Roger takes on the role of stay-at-home-dad during this episode. When Jemmy comes home from school and doesn’t come to the house, Roger follows him. It allows for a talk as Jemmy explains that he was disciplined at school for speaking Gaelic.

Roger isn’t angry with his son. There’s no reason to be. It’s that the school system is trying to wipe out the language, and the best way to do that is to beat it out of them. Yes, I’m being sarcastic there. This is something that really happened, and not just in Scotland. There have been attempts to get rid of many languages. Just look at the Residential Schools in North America.

I just love how Roger is calm in speaking to Jemmy. It’s clear that he’s angry, but not at his son.
