Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter opens with Claire’s medical practice in Savannah now running. Mrs. Bradshaw brings her young slave to see her. Sophronia has given birth—although the baby died in labor—and is now suffering from fistulas. The only way to help is through surgery, and Claire needs to make ether for that. We also get some backstory as to the fact that it was Mr. Bradshaw who made Sophoria pregnant. This certainly reminds us that we’re in the South.

Claire asks for a week to be able to treat Sophoria. She doesn’t really want to make the ether, but she has to help this poor child. Claire isn’t about to let a slave just end up being killed, as I’m sure that’s what the Bradshaws would do to cut their losses if she ends up causing problems for them. Again, it’s a reminder we’re back in the South.

After they’ve left, Claire sees William. She rushes out to him, but it’s clear that he’s not all that interested in talking to her. He does agree to have a drink with her, though. The two are able to catch up and Claire finds out why William is in Savannah.

He shares a little bit about Richardson and then Randall. That’s Denys Randall. Claire shares a little of what she knows and William tries to pry more out of her. She isn’t going to share everything. It’s not like everything she knows about Denys’s parents is even all that relevant at this point.

Claire finishes the chapter by telling William where the family is staying should he need help. He’s not ready for that just yet.
