The chapter starts with Roger and Buck on their way back to Lallybroch. Roger is trying to figure out what to do. He needs to tell Brian something about J.W. MacKenzie, but what? It’s not like he can tell Brian the full truth, but Brian has been so open with him up to this point. It feels wrong not to say anything.

Then it comes to Buck wanting to see Geillis again. Roger is busy trying to keep Buck away from the woman, and that leads to him thinking about Morag, what Buck has shared about his marriage, and the time Roger spent with Morag.

He ends up thinking about Mrs. Graham and Reverend Wakefield. They made it clear that sometimes you can’t worry yourself with other people’s problems. They just need a friendly ear and a prayer as they go about their own life. This is one of those times.

As they start to see Lallybroch, something runs in front of Roger. He sees Jemmy and he is immediately off his horse to get to his son. That’s when he learns Mandy is also here somewhere, but where? Well, Buck has Mandy.

Even Buck is overcome with emotion when he sees both Mandy and Jem. It’s clear that he has been worried about his descendant, even if he didn’t really show it. It’s a beautiful moment.
