We know House of the Dragon Season 2 is happening. The big question for many is when the season could premiere. Will we see it in 2023?

While a lot of other TV shows are halting production during the writers strike, the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off continues. All scripts were fully written, and that means the team behind it thinks that production can keep going. There are a lot of questions about what will happen when it comes to rewrites and the writers not being there, but we’ll have to see what the quality ends up being like when the show premieres.

So, when will the show premiere? Is there a chance that we’ll see it this year, or will we need to wait until 2024 and beyond?

Will House of the Dragon Season 2 premiere in 2023?

There is some bad news to start. Don’t expect the second season to premiere in 2023. There just isn’t the time in the year to be able to get through all the work needed before it premieres.

Filming only started in April, and it will take a few month, even with only eight episodes to the season. On top of that is the post-production, and like Outlander, that can take just as long as filming does. It could take longer for a series like this Game of Thrones prequel. The dragons have a lot of details that need to be added in the post-production stage.

So, we’re looking at early 2024 at the very earliest. HBO president Casey Bloys warned us that it could be summer 2023. He has a good idea of how long production takes for a show like this, so we’re going to listen to him.

The writers strike could end up pushing things back. The show may realize that it’s at a point where it needs the writers back in.
