Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 90 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter is focused on Ian and William. Ian wants a weapon. It’s not that he doesn’t trust William. He just doesn’t trust the Hessians that they had run into before. Ian knows that it will be better if he has a weapon, and so William gets a branch for Ian to use as a club.
William does wonder if he should have left Ian to go with Rachel and the girls. Ian points out that Rachel is far more stubborn than even Jamie, and that says a lot to us as readers. It’s probably no wonder Ian fell for her.
Of course, William doesn’t want to talk about Jamie, but that’s where the conversation goes. Ian admits that he’s known about William for 10 years or so. He worked it out the day he pulled William out of the privy. The way William looked was Jamie when angry.
Ian then shares that he thinks William is a good man. That’s something Rachel believes, and Ian trusts Rachel’s opinions of people.
This is when William decides to taunt Ian into staying alive. He makes it clear that he will marry Rachel should Ian die. It has the desired effect and Ian refuses to die from his wounds. There is a discussion about whether they’re even or not on the lives they’ve each saved for one another, and I get a sense that this is all about a bond that is forming between them.
