Denny performs surgery on Claire in Outlander Book 8, Chapter 83

We get to see Denny at work in Outlander Book 8, Chapter 83. It’s up to him to save Claire’s life. No pressure at all!

I have to wonder how much pressure Denny actually felt. Claire is like a mentor to him. While he was a skilled surgeon anyway, he took a lot in from the things Claire told him. He didn’t look down on her because she is a woman. Instead, he saw that he could learn a lot from her, and I respect that.

Yet here he is, having to perform surgery on her. She has to put her trust in Denny, just like Jamie. That doesn’t stop her from sharing some knowledge with him before she ends up going under from the laudanum.

It don’t get a sense of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s more of being focused in the moment to see the type of surgeon Denny is.

As for it being used in the TV series, I certainly expect that. The series hasn’t avoided these moments in the past, and I want to see Denny’s abilities on the screen. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the adaptation section.

Let’s dive into Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 83.
