Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter certainly seems to foreshadow things for Rachel and Ian. I almost get a sense that it’s a repeat of Marsali and Fergus. Marsali wanted to know how to prevent pregnancy, too, but she quickly ended up pregnant. Well, it won’t take long for Rachel to end up pregnant.

The chapter itself is more about setting the scene of things to come, though. It’s also about the state of medical and reproductive knowledge in the past.

Adapting the Written in My Own Heart’s Blood chapter

I could see this chapter being used in the TV series. Even if Dottie isn’t introduced, I could see Rachel being in the whole chapter. I would love to see Dottie as well, but there isn’t much time left. How many new characters do we really want to see introduced?

We know Rachel is coming into the story. We also know that she and Ian are likely to end up together like the book story tells us. This would mean Rachel turns to Claire for this sort of advice the way Marsali once did.

If it’s not included, though, I wouldn’t mind too much. We know Claire is passionate about women understanding how to prevent pregnancy. We’ve seen it in other seasons, so this part could be skipped to focus on more important elements of the story.
