Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 47 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
Claire wakes at the print shop. Henri-Christian comes to deliver food and the newspaper, and Claire wants to know where Jamie is. There is an echo of voices telling HC not to say anything, and Claire is curious what the secret is. She decides to go downstairs to find out.
That’s when Jamie walks in. He is dressed in the uniform of the Continental Army. Claire knows now that there is no way they are going back to the Ridge just yet. She makes it clear that she will be going with them, and Jamie isn’t going to argue this. The Army will need a surgeon.
While the chapter goes on, Claire does think about Hal and Denny. It turns out that Hal has left Chestnut Street. Jenny sent Claire all the items that she’d ordered and some fabric. Claire will need to have some clothes made. What’s happened to her other clothes? They’ve burned up while Claire was making ether.
Jamie isn’t happy that she’s been making ether. The children make it clear that Claire has to do this to save people. It’s clear that Jamie and Claire have their roles in life that they can’t escape.
Germain wants to join Jamie in the Army. He offers jobs that he could do, but Jamie makes it clear that the boy is not going with them. He is too young. This so reminds me of Fergus helping Jamie with so much. Jamie back then had no qualms about including Fergus in dangerous situations, but he won’t do it to Germain. Is that because Jamie has learned his lesson, or is it because he’s more connected to Germain now than he was Fergus at such a young age?
Jamie notes how he may have to kill William. That’s not going to happen just yet due to William’s situation as a Conventioner. The chapter ends with a comment about Jamie’s nightmares. Everything still lives with him.
