Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 40 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
This chapter certainly has some foreshadowing of the story to come with Geillis. It’s clear that Dougal is interested, but I don’t think he’s the only one. There’s a mention of whether anyone can see a resemblance between Buck and Dougal, and I think this foreshadows something else. We know that Buck ends up staying with Geillis for a while, which still gives me the ick.
I also think Roger mentioning Leoch makes it clear that this isn’t the last time Dougal and Roger will run into each other. Roger will need to watch his mouth, especially knowing what happens to everyone.
Adapting the Written in My Own Heart’s Blood chapter
This chapter should be used in the TV series. We know that Dougal is back in the series, and there’s no reason not to have this chapter. It’s good to see Roger and Dougal meet to be able to see a different type of interaction.
Roger notes that he likes Dougal in this chapter. This is a character we’d come to dislike mostly because of the way Claire described him. We need to see people through different lenses, and I’d like to see that on the TV series.
