Andrew Gower will star in The Winter King, a series based on a book series by Bernard Cornwell. What is the TV series going to be about?

If you haven’t heard yet, Andrew Gower has been a very busy man. After Carnival Row filming finished, he wen tonto You Season 4. Now he has another gig. He’s just wrapped filming The Winter King.

The new series is based on the book series by Bernard Cornwell. You’ll likely know the name for a couple of other book-turned-TV series. Cornwell is behind Sharpe and The Last Kingdom books, both of which are excellent shows you need to check out if you haven’t done already.

Of course, The Winter King is now going to be on your radar. It may not arrive until 2024, but it’s going to be worth the wait, we’re sure. Now you just need to know what it’s about.

The Winter King synopsis

The new series is based on the Warlord Chronicles book series. It’s an excellent series to read if you haven’t already, but what about the TV series?

Well, it’s all a retelling of the Arthurian legend. Forget everything you think you know about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, especially if all you know is the Monty Python movie.

The characters aren’t the most likable. They’re probably much closer to what they really were if they did, in fact, live. After all, Arthur is a warlord who has been banished, while Merlin has disappeared. Lancelot is a vain and disliked knight, while Guinevere is a scheming woman looking for power.

The series is set in the Dark Age of Britain’s history, when the Britons were constantly being threatened by the Anglo-Saxons to the East and the Irish to the west. Then there’s the friction between religions.

It’s hard to tell what could be real from history and what is fictional. That’s the beauty of writing about this far into the past. There aren’t many records to stick to.

Cornwell has the ability to write multi-layered characters. You just have to watch The Last Kingdom to see that. We’re certainly excited for The Winter King.
