Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 17 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
John may be a captive, but he is happy right now. Jamie is still alive, and that means he’s no longer married. I love that he is happy that he’s not married. He has always married for duty, and now he gets to be a free man once again. He is also just happy that Jamie is alive, even if they may not be friends right now.
The problem is John is still a captive. Dottie helps him to escape. While bringing him food, she also brings other provisions to make it easier for John to escape, including a knife. Denzell has other provisions to aid with the escape, including a hat.
John waits for Colonel Smith to go to sleep. Now John manages to get out, and he heads straight to the wagon with everything he needs to get away. Denzell has even made sure there is food for him. John gets into the woods and then cuts his hair and rubs it in dirt. He wants to look as uninteresting as possible.
If you’ve only read the main Outlander books, you won’t know what John is willing to do to survive. I love that we get to see this play out to remember that he was in the military.
