Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with some backstory. We find out what happened after William surrendered at Saratoga. While many had been taken prisoner, William was able to use some of his connections to secure a prisoner exchange. However, things went a little awry. General Burgoyne refused to provide a list of the prisoners, which meant the exchange couldn’t happen.

William was able to get free thanks to his connections to Howe. He secured a personal release to Lord John Grey. It certainly helps to explain a few things from An Echo in the Bone.

In the present day, William considers himself a bit of a fraud. He knows that legally he is still the ninth Earl of Ellsmere. That doesn’t mean he feels like he should be. It’s worth remembering that since Geneva was married to the Earl of Ellsmere, William is automatically considered the earl’s son. Jamie pointed that out in The Fiery Cross, and it was all to foreshadow this moment.

The chapter then moves onto William coming across Captain Richardson, who is looking for both John and Hal. It seems that Richardson wants something to do with William’s family, and William is curious about that. We’re curious about that.
