We like to complain about Outlander not being nominated for awards. Sadly, the show wasn’t eligible for the SAG Awards nominations in 2023.
We certainly feel the disappointment when we don’t see Outlander nominated for awards. We know the actors deserve it. The high quality of the costumes and staging also deserve praise through awards. Yet, more often than not, the show is snubbed.
You may have thought the show was snubbed with the recent award nominations. The SAG Awards announced its list of nominations, with none of our favorite actors in sight. Well, we were never going to see our show on the SAG nominations list, and it’s for one big reason.
Outlander isn’t a SAG show
The Screen Actor’s Guild is one of the unions around the world for actors. Shows are SAG shows or thy’re not SAG shows; it is that simple. There are some restrictions that come from not being a SAG show, and that includes not being nominated for its awards. In the rules for the awards, shows and actors need to be within the SAG-AFTRA jurisdiction, which our series does not seem to be.
Our series is not a SAG show. This has come up ni the past, and not just for award shows. It’s come up due to filming and actors. For example, the series turned to Indigenous actors in Canada rather than the United States for Season 4 because of SAG guidelines.
But one thing that is clear is that Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and all the other actors are not eligible for nominations in this awards show. The show as a whole isn’t eligible, and it doesn’t matter if episodes aired in the right timeframe or not.
Caitriona Balfe has been nominated for a SAG Award in the past. This was in 2022 for Belfast. She can still work on productions that are eligible, but Outlander as a whole is not eligible.
