Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Jenny and Claire talking when a young soldier turns up looking for Lord John Grey. The Duke of Pardloe wants to see John, making John an active member of the British Army again. This is alarming, and Claire needs to see the duke to explain John’s disappearance.

Jenny makes sure Claire shows off some of her cleavage to help distract the duke. When Claire gets there, Captain Richardson is also there. This throws Claire off a little. She’s thrown off more when she realizes that the Duke of Pardloe is Hal Grey. They are able to discuss Henry quickly, but then Claire slips up with her lie. She’s not convincing at all.

Hal lets her leave at first. Then he confronts Claire and insists that she takes his sedan chair back home. However, Hal instructs the men to take Claire elsewhere. Hal follows on foot, but it’s clear that he can’t keep up. Claire knows that she has asthma, and she wants to help him. She makes sure Hal has some coffee, which is supposed to help temporarily with asthma.

A crowd gathers, suggesting that Hal, as a British officer, should be left to die. As they throw rocks, Germain steps in and makes it clear that he will fight them and tell their fathers. He doesn’t want any harm to come to his Grannie, Claire. I love how Germain stands up for her. He’s so much like Fergus.

Claire is able to get Hal to Lord John Grey’s house. Claire makes it loud and clear that Hal is under her protection, and that’s where we leave them.
