Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 3 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
Jenny offers Claire an olive branch when Mrs. Figg asks who she is. Jenny says that she is Claire’s “good-sister,” and Claire knows that Jenny means this. Jenny doesn’t seem to have the ability to hide things like Jamie does.
The three women get to work on cleaning up the mess William left behind. This leads to catching everyone up on things that have happened.
First, the matter of Lord John’s safety. Claire explains that Jamie took him hostage, but it’s clear that Claire isn’t worried. She knows Jamie and John are friends.
Second, how Jamie and Jenny survived. Jenny catches Mrs. Figg up on the whole situation. It turns out that Jenny and Jamie went to Marsali’s print shop, which is where they learned of Claire’s location. Maybe Jamie had a sense of what had happened when he found out all this.
Third, who William’s father is. Mrs. Figg is shocked to learn the truth, but Claire explains enough to help Mrs. Figg understand the circumstances.
Jenny does share that they had to avoid the British all the way up from Virginia. This is when Mrs. Figg learns that everyone around her is the enemy. What does this mean for Lord John? There’s nothing to worry about. Claire explains that since he doesn’t have a commission, he’s not important enough to be taken. That’s a relief to Mrs. Figg. She doesn’t care that John isn’t that important.
