Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Bree looking for a way to feel close to Roger. That leads to her grabbing the snake that belongs to Jemmy. It helps, but it’s not enough. She wants to feel close to her parents now, but she doesn’t want to read the letters without Roger around. Maybe that’s a good idea considering the emotions she’d feel for them with Roger somewhere in the past.

Bree starts looking through the books on the shelves instead, and that’s where she comes across some of Frank’s. She remembers asking Frank to look after Young Ian’s deceased baby girl, and now she wants Frank to look out for Jemmy too. I love that she thinks of Frank in this moment. Of course he’d look out for his grandson.

What stands out for me is that she thinks of Frank’s spirit. She doesn’t ask the spirits of Claire and Jamie. In her heart, they’re still alive but somewhere in the past. It’s like they’re separated by an ocean instead of time.

While looking at one of the books, a letter falls out. It’s from Frank written for Brianna and makes it very clear that he knows Bree is a time traveler. He also knows that she goes to the past and that’s why he made sure Bree could protect herself. He wanted to do everything he could to set her up for a life in the past, and I adore that about him. It was always a theory up to this point.

Frank wanted to tell Bree something. Could it be that Jamie is her father? Could it be that she’s a time traveler? Frank is never that clear, but he does fear that Claire will take Bree through the stones and leave him. This is something Frank clearly feared. He worried about making one mistake and Claire leaving, but also knows that Claire keeps her word.

There are a lot of questions that come from this letter. The biggest is about Bree being “a dangerous person.” What makes her dangerous? We know she killed Stephen Bonnet, but Frank would never have read about that. Is it that Bree will do what she needs to survive and to fight for her family?

Her thoughts are cut off when there’s movement in the house. Rob Cameron has turned up looking for her. He wants her to tell Jem to tell him where the gold is. So Jemmy isn’t in the past, after all!
