The chapter starts with Claire and Ian getting to Philadelphia. Ian has to leave right away. He needs to go into hiding as he is of the right age to be questioned. Claire is able to walk through the streets without anyone stopping her.

She gets straight to Fergus and Marsali’s printshop. Marsali looks pregnant, but she notes that this isn’t the case at all. It’s a disguise. Should someone set fire to the printshop, she’ll be able to get letters out in her “bump.”

Claire now looks to Henri-Christian, who needs to have his tonsils removed. Claire also notes that he has strep, and she needs to look at clearing that up. That means she needs to brew some penicillin, and she will also need some tools to help with the surgery. Lord John Grey once sent her everything she needed, but she can’t remember the apothecary.

When she figures out which apothecary it is in the area, she comes across Lord John Grey. John is disappointed that Jamie isn’t with her and that he doesn’t have any use for him. However, he is happy to hear that Claire needs his help. He offers to get the items she needs as long as she’ll look at his nephew, Henry Grey.

This also gives Claire a chance to find out that Denny has been around. She also sees that Rachel is there. Claire is stopped short of telling Rachel where Ian is when John is around. It’s important to remember that John is on the opposite side of everyone else, and I love that John is respectable and loyal enough to remind Claire of this.

John gives Claire and Rachel time to talk about Ian. Claire will then go to see Henry Grey.
