Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire and Jamie getting back to Lallybroch. Claire is the first one to see Michael Murray, who is wearing a black armband. His wife has passed away, and Claire immediately embraces him. They have a connection, and I think this is part of Claire understanding what it is like to lose a spouse. She’s lost Frank in the past.

When the family turns up, they immediately embrace him. Only Ian Sr. isn’t there. He’s too ill to be around the family right now.

With Michael sharing that he’s going to France, Claire realizes that she needs to tell him of what’s to come. There are questions of how she knows this, so Claire decides it’s time to tell the entire family the truth. She’s a time traveler and she knows all about the French Revolution.

This is when Jenny asks Claire to save Ian. When Claire says she can’t, Jenny believes that Claire is going to allow Ian to die in spite of her. She’s sure Claire holds a grudge against her for getting Jamie to marry Laoghaire. Of course, that’s not what Claire believes at all. She wouldn’t allow Ian to die if she could avoid it.

I know Jenny gets a lot of hate for her comments here. Something to remember is that she’s scared. She’s losing the man she loves, and she wants to hold onto any hope that someone can save Ian. She wants to blame Claire because it’s easier than blaming an illness that nobody can stop. Jenny is cruel to Claire, but I do get it. Fear and grief can lead to people acting awful to others, and I think Claire understands that deep down.
