Outlander Book Club: An Echo in the Bone Chapter 56 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There are a couple bits of foreshadowing in this chapter. The first is Claire and Jamie seeing Brianna return. Claire thinks of Brianna and the children at one point when she’s with William, and I immediately get a thought of Bree, Roger, and the children coming over the hill at the end of the eighth book. I’m sure it’s not meant to be foreshadowing, but I certainly feel it when reading.
Then there’s the foreshadowing of William learning the truth. Claire can’t help but think of Jamie when she sees him. At the end of the chapter, she tells Jamie that William looks like him. This is all a hint that William will learn the truth the minute he sees Jamie. There is no hiding this paternity.
Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter
I want to see this chapter used in the series. I know fans get fed up of Claire and Jamie being separated, but that happens in the books. And it does lead to some big moments. I want to see Claire see William and have that shock of the resemblance. I also want to see Ian be the one to step in and make it clear that William owes him a debt. It’s such an echo of Hal saving Jamie because of Jamie allowing John to live before Prestonpans.
It is such a short time of the two being separated, though. I wonder if the show will extend this so that Claire and Jamie’s separation feels a little tenser. I could see the writers making it feel like Claire and Jamie won’t be reunited for a while, but there’s no need for it. This whole chapter isn’t about how Claire will get back to Jamie but about how Claire reacts around William.
