Droughtlander suggestions: Watch The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 on Hulu
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 has premiered on Hulu. Is this a series for Outlander fans? It could get you through a little more of Droughtlander.
It’s finally time to watch The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5. The first two episodes are now on Hulu, with the remaining eight episodes coming weekly. This is the penultimate season, with Season 6 confirmed as the final season of the series. It’s not the intended end of the universe, though, with plans to bring us a series based on the second book, The Testaments.
This is not a series that’s anything like Outlander. It will make a lot of fans question why this series is even a suggestion at this point. However, there are some elements that crossover, and it’s also an important look at what could happen with the wrong people in power.
What is The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 about?
The fifth season picks up straight after the events in the Season 4 finale. We saw June and a bunch of other former Handmaids and other women from Gilead take down Fred Waterford. June now has to live with what she did, but will she choose a life of freedom? Is she going to turn herself in for her actions? Considering everything happened in No Man’s Land, is there anyone who can prosecute her for the murder?
Meanwhile, we’ll see Serena Joy figure out what to do next. She’s a pregnant widow, and it looks like she’s heading back to Gilead. Will the Commanders accept her considering it looked like she and Fred were going to start revealing all about Gilead to save their own necks? Will they want the miracle child?
There are a lot of other players in the series. We have storylines to come for Esther and Janine, Luke and Moira, and even hopefully an exit storyline for Emily.
Why watch The Handmaid’s Tale during Droughtlander
It’s not set in the past. It doesn’t involve time travel or even any sort of love story, really. Except it being based on a book, there’s nothing about The Handmaid’s Tale that matches Outlander. Why would something like this be a suggestion for Droughtlander?
Well, there are some extremely strong women in this story. The series focuses on a brutal society that allows rape (as long as it’s in a form of a ceremony to bring about children!) and mutilations. Out of that has come women that we can all follow. They all gain their strength from trauma, and they all deal with that trauma in different ways.
June is focused on revenge and saving her daughter from Gilead, while Moira wants to move on and help other people get out. Serena Joy is focused on her family, while also believing in some aspects of Gilead being right. Esther and Janine are focused on survival. Then there’s Aunt Lydia who, well, part of it is survival but a lot of it is having power and authority.
There are many different storylines to pull us in, and the characters are fleshed out and well-written. And there’s no doubt that the actors are excellent.
It being nothing like Outlander could be a good thing. There’s less need to compare a love to Claire and Jamie’s, and there’s no need to compare wigs or makeup. It’s a chance to just watch another show and get through a few more weeks of Droughtlander.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 airs Wednesdays on Hulu.
