The Serpent Queen has premiered on STARZ. Is this something to help get through a bit more of Droughtlander? Here’s a look at why it’s for Outlander fans.

Fans of Outlander have likely kept their STARZ subscription for the time being. The Season 6 DVD and Digital release isn’t happening until the end of this month and there is no other way to rewatch the season right now. So, why not make the most of the subscription?

There’s a new show just premiered on the network. It’s a period drama that is sure to help you get through a little more of Droughtlander. Since it’s a weekly release, it will get you through a fair few weeks of 2022. It’s all about The Serpent Queen.

What is The Serpent Queen about?

The new series follows the life of Catherine de Medici. A commoner in Italy, she ended up becoming the French Queen Consort to Henri II. How was that possible considering her lowly upbringings? That’s something the series goes into.

During the first episode, we see Catherine’s younger life. From there, we’ll see her rise to queen and the need to deal with something no woman wants to: her husband being in love with another woman. Henri II had a mistress, Diane de Poitiers, a woman older than him who could not have children, which is why she couldn’t become Queen Consort.

For the Reign fans out there, we will get to see Mary, Queen of Scots too. This is a chance to maybe get a little more factual with Mary’s upbringing in France.

Why watch The Serpent Queen during Droughtlander?

If you already have a STARZ subscription, why not use it? It doesn’t make sense to have it just sitting there. So, that’s just one reason.

Another reason is that this is another period drama. One of the things that draws us to Outlander is the fact it’s set in the past. At one point, the story even goes to France, although at a time after Henri II and Catherine. It’s a chance to connect through there to see what France was like in the past, long before the revolution was a consideration.

There is also an element of romance in it. We have Henri II and Diane, but Catherine isn’t completely alone. She and Henri do share some moments, and it’s always worth seeing a woman’s rise to some sort of power.

There are eight episodes to the series. Assuming there will be a week off during the run, we’re looking at filling up the next two months of Droughtlander. We’re almost there!
