Outlander Book Club: An Echo in the Bone Chapter 11 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with why Claire, Jamie, and Ian haven’t left yet. Lizzie is pregnant, and Claire needs to be there for the birth. The baby is lying traverse, and Claire is worried about this. Jamie can even sense her worry without fully understanding everything, and I love this about the couple.
Claire goes through her options. Without her ether, she doesn’t have many options. Either Lizzie or the baby will die, or maybe even both, and she doesn’t want any of those options to happen. On the night Lizzie goes into labor, Jamie says the warrior’s blessing and Claire heads out.
I do want to note one thing. Ian says that Jo could be the father. Jamie ordered Jo to go but that didn’t happen. I’m not sure why that needs to be stated. Claire had already mentioned a couple of chapters ago that she was getting used to the Beardsley throuple.
Fortunately, the birth goes well. What I adore is that Mr. Wemyss’s new wife, Monika, is there to help. She has no judgment for her stepdaughter and her husbands. She just wants to see the baby birthed and be there to help. She and her husband love each other, and that’s very clear in this chapter.
Now that the baby is born, it’s time to leave. However, Claire can’t help but worry about the people of the Ridge. War is coming, and that could mean Bobby is called out and will perish. Claire thinks about Hiram Crombie as the only option to lead the Ridge, and she knows that the Beardsleys would be in trouble with that. Hiram is strict and judgmental.
During the chapter, we get some of Jamie’s POV. He thinks of his wedding to Claire and the time in the Abbey. He always thinks about Claire. It connects back to the previous chapter with the talk of home. While Claire isn’t home for Jamie, she is his sanctuary, and that’s just as important. The ending brings Claire and Jamie together physically and intimately again. It’s time for Scotland.
