House of the Dragon has premiered on HBO and HBO Max. This is certainly a series for Outlander fans to watch to get through Droughtlander.
It’s been a long wait for the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. We’re certainly not complaining though. The first episode arrives tonight and based on the promos, we know the quality of the graphics is certainly going to be worth the wait.
As for the story, well, we’re excited. We’re making it one of our Droughtlander watches, and that’s not just because Graham McTavish and Wil Johnson are among the cast. Of course, they are big reasons we, as Outlander fans, even considered the series for Droughtlander to start with.
What is House of the Dragon about?
The HBO series is a prequel to Game of Thrones. Don’t worry if you haven’t watched Game of Thrones. It’s a prequel, which means you won’t need to understand anything that happened in the OG series. If you really want to know some details about character names, lands, etc, you’ll want to read Fires & Blood by George R.R. Martin instead.
The series is set 200 years before Game of Thrones. It starts in the time of King Viserys Targaryen. He has decided to name his daughter, Rhaenya, his heir, but this is a huge problem. Westeros hasn’t had a queen in her own right. It’s not clear if she is suitable, and there are male potentials who want the Iron Throne for themselves.
And so begins the Targaryen Civil War. Just how will it all play out? We know in Game of Thrones that Cersei became the first Westerosi Queen in her own right, but is it possible that Rhaenya Targaryen’s reign has been forgotten by those who wrote the history?
Why watch House of the Dragon during Droughtlander
What makes this so great for Outlander fans? Well, the fact that some popular Outlander cast members are involved is one of the reasons. We’re excited to see Graham McTavish back on our screens, and Wil Johnson has a role that we’re looking forward to seeing.
There is also an overall standout cast. We have Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine, and Olivia Cooke in the series. What’s not to love?
Outlander fans who also watched Game of Thrones will want to check it out for that reason. There are dragons, and there are stories about a family dynasty that we’d only heard about throughout the OG series.
Then there are the costumes, the use of magic, and the focus on civil war. There is going to be something always happening, questions about characters we can trust, and much more. Plus, with it getting a weekly release, it’s taking us through to the end of October, so we have something to get us through a little more of Droughtlander.
House of the Dragon airs on HBO and HBO Max on Sundays.
