The books themselves are standalone stories. You can read them in any order that you want, but they do follow the Outlander timeline, and they do work within the overall world. Each book will also include some details from the other books as the stories continue.

Not sure which order to read the Lord John Grey books in? Diana Gabaldon has shared the timeline order for us.

The reading order of the Lord John Grey books

Everything starts with Lord John and the Hellfire Club. This was the first of the series written, and it was supposed to be a short story. It ended up being longer, and you can read it in Past Poisons and in Lord John and the Hand of the Devils.

You’ll see that the story was originally published in the late 1990s. From there, the rest of the books have been published in the 2000s. Here’s the full order:

  • Lord John and the Hellfire Club*
  • Lord John and the Private Matter
  • Lord John and the Succubus*
  • Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade
  • Lord John and the Haunted Soldier*
  • Lord John and the Custom of the Army
  • The Scottish Prisoner
  • Lord John and the Plague of Zombies
  • Besieged

*These novellas are in Lord John and the Hand of the Devils.

Custom of the Army originally appeared in Warriors Volume 1. Plague of Zombies originally appeared in Down These Strange Streets.

Besieged wasn’t included on the list on Diana’s website. However, it takes place in May 1762, which is after the Plague of Zombies‘s 1761.
