We know each season of Outlander is based on one book in the series. Which book is Outlander Season 7 going to be based on?

Each season of Outlander is based on one book in the series. Sure, there are some storylines taken from other books and some storylines developed by the writers, but for the most part we get one book per season.

Before we get into a new season, we like to know which book the story is based on. This helps those who want to read ahead figure out which book to pick out of book stores. It also helps those who want to be show-first fans to know where to stop when reading the books.

Outlander Season 7 will pick up with stories from one book and then move into stories from another book. Here’s all you need to know.

Outlander Season 7 is mostly based on An Echo in the Bone

The first part of Outlander Season 7 is going to be based on A Breath of Snow and Ashes. That’s because Season 6 had to be cut short due to the pandemic and Caitriona Balfe’s pregnancy. The season was four episodes shorter than initially planned, but those episodes would be added to the seventh season.

We’ll see the first four episodes or so wrap up the storylines from the sixth book in the series. After that, the story will move onto the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone.

Caution: We’ll get into some spoilers from An Echo in the Bone from this point.

The book picks up off the back of A Breath of Snow and Ashes. At the end of that book, Roger and Brianna take Jemmy and their newborn Amanda to their own time. Mandy needs surgery to save her life and it’s only possible in the 20th century.

Jem is kidnapped and taken through the stones. Roger, with the help of his ancestor Buck, end up going through time to get to Jemmy and save him.

Meanwhile in the past, Claire and Jamie head to Scotland to deal with a few things there. This includes heading back to Lallybroch, where Claire finds out that Ian Murray has TB and can’t be saved. It leads to Jenny leaving Scotland behind for Scotland, but there is a moment where it looks like Jenny and Jamie die.

Just how much of this book can fit into the season? That’s something we’re all curious about. An Echo in the Bone is certainly worth jumping into. We will start our read-through of the novel tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 15.
