Just the Outlander chapter

Everything starts with Jamie gathering the men of Fraser’s Ridge. It’s time to give them the choice of following him or remaining on the side of the Crown.

There are questions. Arch wants to know about the oath made to the Crown. Jamie points out that the oath was made under duress and not an honorable one, therefore it doesn’t really count. Hiram Crombie wants to know about the oath made to God, and Jamie reminds him of the Declaration of Abroath.

This is about freedom. Jamie realizes that he is willing to fight for freedom as well as for his family.

Of course, the Ardsmuir men join Jamie. Even Hiram Crombie decides to join the fight for freedom, and that is somewhat surprising. The McGillvarys also decide to join, which is a little surprising but likely comes down to Claire helping Manfred and some of the bad blood no longer being there between the families.

The biggest surprise is Richard Brown and his men. They want to join with Jamie, and they will take commands from him. This is major considering Brown was involved in trying to have Claire executed for murder.

At the end of the chapter, it’s the night before a battle. Jamie tells Claire that Murtagh is with him and he finds it comforting. Claire isn’t sure if this is a good or bad omen for the way the battle will turn out. Of course, she knows how the war eventually turns out, but that doesn’t mean Jamie will make it through it alive.
