The chapter starts from Forbes’s POV as Roger and Ian find him. They realize that he had something to do with it all. After all, Forbes felt slighted by Bree not accepting his proposal, and that has led to a feud between him and the Frasers ever since.

However, Forbes refuses to say anything. We then jump to Jamie’s POV, where he finds Forbes’s mother and aunt. The two are having a picnic, and Jamie invites them to his picnic. This gives him the opportunity to get an item of jewelry to give to a child to send to Forbes.

When we switch to Roger’s POV, Forbes gets a package that includes the jewel. He doesn’t think much of it at first, thinking Jamie wouldn’t hurt his mother. Roger makes it clear that as a Highlander, Jamie would hurt her. Forbes decides it’s time to tell the truth, including that Bonnet plans to take Bree to London.

Roger doesn’t think that likely. There is more opportunity for a pirate in the colonies, so he’ll stay there. He does have the name of the ship and some hope that he’ll find Bree. As he leaves, he turns back to see that Young Ian has cut Forbes’s ear off.
