The chapter picks up with Forbes quickly getting out of dodge. He’s using the pretence of needing to get his mother to the seaside, and that means a trip to Edenton. If the place name rings a bell right now, that’s because Roger is in Edenton. Of course, everything is about to connect in the coming chapters.

Forbes is clearly hiding something. He just wants to keep moving, though.

However, Forbes’s mother complains about the carriage ahead of them kicking up dust. At the next stop, Forbes goes to the carriage to ask for them to drop behind him and his mother. They do just that, but we don’t get to know who was in the carriage. The curtains were drawn to hide the face.

Forbes can’t help but keep looking back at the carriage nervously after this. His mother notices, and she wants to know why he’s so nervous. He lies to say that he’s not. They just need to focus on the trip to the seaside.
