Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Jamie and Ian getting to New Bern. They head straight for Fergus and Marsali, who believe that the sheriff is the best person to turn to. While Fergus has heard a little about Claire, it’s not enough to help Jamie.

When they get to the sheriff, they find the Black woman with her baby sleeping. This is where there is some humor in an otherwise tense chapter. Jamie has to wake the woman up with well water, but she’s not sober enough to fully make herself comprehendible. That doesn’t stop Jamie and the others from getting as much information as they can.

It’s only after this that everyone finally listens to Joan. She has the letter from Claire, which tells them that Claire is with the governor. Of course, Jamie wants to head out right away but Marsali makes it clear they need to eat first. Ian is the best person to head to the palace since he’ll be the least recognizable.

When Jamie and Ian do leave, Jamie sees Claire in a carriage with the governor. He recognizes Claire right away, but as he tries to chase after the carriage, he passes out.

Meanwhile, we find out from Claire where she’s going next. They’re heading to Brunswick. That’s not something Claire wanted to find out.
