There’s an Outlander prequel in the works. It will also air on STARZ along with the parent show, and now we know a little more about the series.
It’s not surprising to hear that STARZ is looking to expand the world of Outlander. This is one of the biggest shows on the network, and fans are highly likely to turn up for a spin-off.
Matt B. Roberts will be involved in the spin-off series. Likewise, Maril Davis will return as an EP for the show. They are heavily connected to the parent series still. It is possible for showrunners and EPs to have multiple shows on the go. Davis works with Ron D. Moore on For All Mankind too.
We’re getting a few more details about the new series. This includes what the show is going to be about.
Outlander prequel is focused on Jamie’s parents
According to Sam Heughan when he spoke to Esquire, the Outlander prequel series is going to be about Jamie’s parents. This does mean that Heughan isn’t going to be in the series. It’s not all that clear if he’s going to be a producer on the series or not yet.
"All I can tell you is I’m not in it, as Jamie’s not in it! … I believe that it’s a prequel focusing on Jamie’s parents when they were younger, so I guess you might see a young version of him at some point."
Heughan explained that he’s not in it because it’s about Jamie’s parents. We know a little about Brian and Ellen Fraser at this point. The books have gone into more detail, but we’ve learned some from the TV series. Ellen ran away from her family to marry Brian. She only returned to the MacKenzies when she was visibly pregnant so her father couldn’t find a way to dissolve the marriage.
Ellen and Brian had a good life together at Lallybroch. Sadly, Ellen died after the birth of their fourth child, and the baby died with her. The oldest child, William, had also died, and Brian was left to raise Jenny and Jamie.
We know Diana Gabaldon is working on a book about Jamie’s parents, so it’s not surprising there’s a TV series in development, too.
