There are some excellent shows to watch to get through Droughtlanders. As we enter another one, you’ll want to turn to Netflix for some viewing ideas. This is the home of a lot of excellent period dramas and British masterpieces. Peaky Blinders is one of them.
The series is set in 1919 and follows the Shelby family. Tommy is the head of the gang, and he needs to deal with the highs and lows of the time period. Some of this involves the IRA, the communists, and the threat of sickness and another war as time goes on.
What is Peaky Blinders about?
As mentioned, the series follows the Shelby family. It’s 1919, and the country is still struggling with the end of the Great War. Soldiers are returning and facing the horrors of what they saw and did, and that includes our lead character Tommy Shelby. He routinely has nightmares of the things he did in the Great War.
However, he needs to focus on the present. Now that soldiers have returned, they’re realizing that they meant nothing to the government. Promises made have not been kept, and so, Tommy and his family have decided to take matters into their own hands.
Tommy wants to do more than run the streets with his gang called the Peaky Blinders. He wants to run the world. Those high goals will have some negative effects when it comes to family.
Why watch Peaky Blinders during Droughtlander?
This is a long series that is perfect for a binge-watch during Droughtlander. The sixth and final season has just been added to Netflix. You’ll get a series that runs from start to finish, so you don’t feel like questions will remain unanswered.
Then there’s the excellent casting. Throughout the seasons, we’ve seen some excellent actors and some of them are Outlander actors. One of those is Ned Dennehy, who played Lionel Brown in Outlander. One to look out for is Helen McCrory, who passed away before the filming of the sixth season. Her death is written into the series to bring us closure.
On top of that, we have a look at what England was like after the Great War. We know a little of what things were like after the Second World War through Claire, but the Great War was something much more shocking. It was the first time a war on that level was witnessed, and it was supposed to be the war to end all wars. It certainly didn’t, and we see some of the reasons why throughout Peaky Blinders.
