Why the low live ratings aren’t a concern for Outlander renewals
Sony and STARZ are currently in talks about Outlander Season 8. It’s easy to look at the live ratings and get concerned, but these numbers aren’t the big problem.
We would love to see the live ratings for Outlander to be high. That just isn’t the case, and it is more of a network problem than a show problem. Premium cable networks don’t get the same live ratings that the big broadcast networks do.
This doesn’t mean there’s a concern right now for the series to be cancelled. One of the benefits of premium cable networks is the way they make the money. It’s not about the live ratings to make sure people are checking out the ads. The premium cable networks make their money through people subscribing to the channel or the app each one has set up. In this case, it’s all about the STARZ app.
STARZ will look at the people subscribing during Outlander runs
The big concern for the network is the number of people subscribing to the app when the series is on the air. We know a lot of fans will sign up for STARZ just as a new season starts and then cancel when it ends—or some will cancel as soon as the season is available on DVD and Blu-ray so they can still watch the latest season whenever they want.
So, if you’re looking at how low the live ratings are for Season 6 and worried about the future of the series, there’s no need to. STARZ will look at what the app ratings were like. Sadly, we don’t get to see these numbers, but they are usually much stronger than the live ratings. We just have to remember that while the live ratings for Outlander Season 5 were low, the app ratings were among the strongest of the whole series at the time.
