Why the mention of Faith in Outlander Season 6 was perfect
During Outlander Season 6, Jamie brought up memories of Faith. As we mark another birthday for her, we look back at why the mention was perfect.
May 12 marks Faith’s birthday. Yes, she was stillborn, but this is still her birthday. It’s still a day for Claire and Jamie to mark in their own special way. It’s also a day for us to mark as fans of the books and TV show.
Past characters don’t always get a mention. It would be easy to overlook Faith at times, especially since Jamie wasn’t there at the time of her birth or for the weeks after. He had no idea what had happened to his wife and child while he was in the Bastile. And yet, he keeps her in his memory, and that was clear in Outlander Season 6.
Young Ian and Jamie have very similar lives in Outlander
Something that we’ve seen in the past is that Young Ian and Jamie’s lives have been somewhat similar. Young Ian was raped, which is something that Jamie could relate to. When Ian struggled with the trauma afterward, Jamie was the one to share some of his experiences, especially how he felt afterward.
It only makes sense that we get something similar in Season 6. We found out that Ian’s wife, Emily, suffered a stillbirth. Ian wasn’t there, and he never got to meet his daughter. That’s something Jamie could relate to.
It’s rare a TV show will focus on a man’s pain when it comes to loss. Men are constantly told to bottle their feelings, but that’s not healthy and it shouldn’t have to be the case. Ian tries to bottle his feelings, but Jamie is the one there to help Ian talk. And Jamie doesn’t bring up his own experience at first. He gives Ian the chance to share, and it’s only when it’s clear that Ian needs some advice that Jamie shares. I love this balance between listening and sharing.
