Richard Brown splits up Claire and Jamie
At first, things go relatively smoothly. That is until the man Claire shot dies on the journey. Did anyone really expect him to live? You’ve got to love that people are mad at Claire for defending herself and her home.
Regardless, the men don’t like her. And neither do the village people when they go through one of the local homesteads. Those people start throwing stones and a fight breaks out. Claire does punch one of the men coming in to attack, which later leads to a conversation about her hand potentially being broken.
Tom is the one who manages to break up the commotion by firing a shot into the air. He wants to see justice happen, that’s all. He has a right to that since Malva was his daughter. Richard Brown manages to get his Committee of Safety through the village, and they’re back on their way.
Overnight, it turns out that Young Ian has been tracking them. He manages to get Jamie alone and wants to help. He wants Claire and Jamie to run. That’s not going to happen at this point, so Ian has to leave to get help. That’s the only option at this point.
The troubles aren’t over, though. Richard and his men decide to negate the deal with Tom. They split Claire and Jamie up. Richard will take Claire to Wilmington and one of Richard’s men will deal with Jamie. Tom chooses to stay with Claire. He knows Jamie can take care of himself, but Claire will die if she’s not with her. Why would he really care if he believed Claire had killed Malva?
Claire knows that Tom is right, though. When she finally gets to Wilmington, she’s placed in a jail cell. Tom watches as Richard pays the jailer. It’s clear that Richard is going to get this jailer in his pocket, and Tom is concerned. So, he decides to give Claire some money to look after herself.
