Jamie told Lord John Grey the truth about the side he’s on in Outlander Season 6, Episode 5. Does this mean their friendship is over?
Lord John Grey and Jamie worked together to protect the printer as tensions rose in Wilmington during Outlander Season 6, Episode 5. However, Jamie’s viewpoint was more of just allowing people freedom of choice. He later told the Sons of Liberty that attacking people for their political view isn’t right. Part of their rebellion is for freedom, and that includes freedom of political choice.
At the end of the episode, Jamie realized that he couldn’t lie to Lord John Grey anymore. He had to tell him the truth about joining the Sons of Liberty. Jamie isn’t doing this to spy. He is doing it because this is what he believes in.
John is disappointed. He can’t understand why Jamie would make himself a rebel again. If only John knew why Jamie had chosen the side of the Patriots. Maybe he will in due time. But for now, John just views Jamie as a rebel.
Can Lord John Grey and Jamie remain friends in Outlander?
We don’t really need the book spoilers to know what’s going to happen between Lord John Grey and Jamie right now. The ending to Episode 5 told us.
John was angry that Jamie would switch sides, but that doesn’t mean the friendship is over. He agreed to try to give Jamie some time before the soldiers stormed the room where the Sons of Liberty meeting would take place. This was a clear sign that John still regards Jamie as a friend.
However, the two believe that this is the end of the friendship. At least, Jamie believes that it is the end of the friendship because of how he’s disappointed John. This is something Diana Gabaldon discusses with Parade in an after-the-episode interview. They are on two separate sides of a coming war, but that doesn’t mean they can’t find a friendship again afterward. Nor does it mean John or Jamie really want to lose each other as a friend, but they need to manage the hurt feelings and potential distrust in what’s to come.
