Why did Young Ian have to leave the Mohawk in Outlander?
Young Ian shared the story of why he left the Mohawk in Outlander. Let’s break it down. Leaving this family wasn’t his choice.
We got a chance to hear Young Ian’s story with the Mohawk in Outlander Season 6, Episode 4. As expected, Young Ian had to leave the tribe due to something with his wife and child. Young Ian didn’t leave out of choice, but he didn’t leave under bad terms that would lead to broken bridges.
It all came out when Young Ian realized the Mohawk were visiting the Cherokee. Kaheroton was there, and that brought up a lot of memories.
Spirits didn’t combine in Outlander
The Mohawk have a lot of beliefs when it comes to spirits. That’s like a lot of Native American tribes.
Emily and Ian started off with a great life. They got pregnant quickly, and there was a lot of hope about their growing family. Then the hope turned to despair with Emily bleeding heavily one night. The baby didn’t survive.
After that, Emily got pregnant again. This time, she suffered a miscarriage. Young Ian didn’t want to leave his wife, but the Mohawk had a lot of beliefs about the spirits of men and women. A man’s spirit needs to be strong enough to create a child with the woman’s spirit. While Ian had been adopted into the tribe, his spirit was still not right for Emily’s spirit.
Some of the tribe (and Emily) decided it was time for Young Ian to leave. Emily moved onto Kaheroton (and they would end up having a son together), and Young Ian was told to go back to his own family. Not everyone in the tribe agreed with this, but the important people in the tribe were the ones who mattered.
It’s no wonder he suffered so much when he first returned. He was dealing with someone he called brother being with his wife as well as the loss of his child.
