Kezzie Beardsley was the deaf twin in Outlander Season 5, and he definitely didn’t spear. How come he can suddenly speak clearly?

In Outlander Season 5, we met the Beardsley twins. At first, we only met Josiah, and then we found out that he had a brother. This brother was Keziah, and he was deaf.

It’s important to note that Kezzie wasn’t born deaf. He suffered abuse at the hands of Aaron Beardsley, and that led to damaged eardrums. One thing that was clear when we initially met Kezzie was that he couldn’t speak very well.

In both Outlander Season 6, Episode 3 and Episode 4, Kezzie has been able to speak clearly. Is this a continuity error? It’s actually something that’s likely been overlooked but there is a storyline in the book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

How can Kezzie suddenly speak in Outlander?

In the books, we’re told that Kezzie can speak but he doesn’t like to. His words don’t come out all that well because of his deafness, but he does have the ability to speak.

When Claire removes his tonsils, some of his hearing is clearer. This also leads to some of his speech being better. He doesn’t feel as self-conscious about the way he speaks anymore, so he does end up saying more words.

However, his speech isn’t made out to be as clear as it is in the series. I do think the show should have included some sort of mention about Kezzie’s speech getting better to avoid this continuity question, though. It would help the show-first or show-only fans understand this a little better. It would have also been a little better for the speech not to be as clear as it is. That part potentially is a mistake.
