There was a lot going on in Outlander Season 6, Episode 3. When we look at Claire’s story, the main focus is on Tom Christie. He wants the surgery on his hand now that the other one has healed, and Claire had promised to do it.

We see a chance for the two to get to know each other. Claire doesn’t really like Tom, but she gets the chance to know him a little better. And we clearly see that Tom is interested in Claire more and more as each scene passes.

Trying to comfort Fergus

We start with a moment at the beginning of the episode. After Roger saves Henri-Christian, we see Claire trying to comfort Fergus. She wants Fergus to understand that Henri-Christian should be able to have a good life, especially as an educated man.

However, Fergus is scared. Claire hasn’t seen the life of a dwarf in the past, but Fergus has. We see her compassion as she doesn’t try to argue with Fergus too much. She just listens to his circumstances and understands where his mind is right now. We see her as a mother and not as a doctor.

The comment about Adso being a cat

Claire uses the pretense to check on Tom to consider using the ether when she gets a vision of Lionel Brown. She ends up talking to Tom and checks on his hand. This gives the two the chance to bond a little, with Tom apologizing for the way he was during the surgery.

However, the best part of this is when Tom asks about who Claire was talking to in the other room. She mentions it was the cat—not her familiar. She knows that Tom believes in witches. Sure, Tom doesn’t think Claire is a witch, but I just had to laugh at how she pointed out where she knew his thoughts were likely going.

Asking Tom not to take Richard up on his offer

After insisting that Tom borrow Tom Jones, he mentions that Richard Brown has offered Tom the protection of his Committee of Safety. Claire immediately says that Richard is a dangerous man and Tom shouldn’t take him up on the offer.

This is a surprising comment. Claire doesn’t really like Tom. Why would she show her fear and dislike for Richard Brown to a man she doesn’t like? For me, this one moment shows that Claire can’t hide this fear of Richard. She also shows a connection to Tom. She doesn’t think he’s as bad as she initially thought.
