Why was Henri-Christian thrown into the river in Outlander?
Roger had to act fast to save baby Henri-Christian in Outlander Season 6, Episode 3. Why would the fisherfolk boys throw him in the river?
Germain, Aidan, and three other fisherfolk boys just watched as Henri-Christian floated down the river in a basket. Fortunately, Roger was around. He could get into the water and save the baby before it went over the waterfall.
Why would the boys do such a thing to a baby? The synopsis for the episode did tell us, and during the episode, the boys go into more detail about their form of thinking.
The boys thought Henri-Christian was a demon in Outlander
We have to remember that most of these boys had never really been away from their crofters back home. They aren’t educated, and their parents would believe all sorts of superstitions. So, it wasn’t all that surprising to find out they were scared of Henri-Christian.
Henri-Christian is a dwarf. We know that people who aren’t “normal” are considered threats. Some are viewed as witches, some as demons, and some as other ungodly folk. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen babies mistreated due to superstitions. You’ll remember when Claire tried to help a baby not die alone after being left out in the cold with parents believing the baby was a Changeling.
The fisherfolk boys believed that Henri-Christian was a demon. They wanted to see if he would float. If he floated, he wasn’t a child of God. And they pointed out that he did float. Well, of course he would! Henri-Christian was in a basket!
It turns out the boys were scared to touch the baby. They didn’t want to be burned.
Roger, Jamie, Claire, and others realized they would need to do something to help keep the newborn safe. Jamie had a way to do that after Roger baptized his nephew to help make it clear that Henri-Christian is a child of God.
