Why is Fergus so concerned about Henri-Christian in Outlander?
Fergus opened up to Claire about why he’s so concerned about Henri-Christian in Outlander Season 6, Episode 3. What is the full reason?
We’ve seen Fergus struggling in Outlander Season 6. At first, the struggle was due to his shame. He felt like he couldn’t protect Marsali when she needed her the most. Then the end of Episode 2 brought him something else to worry about: Baby Henri-Christian.
His son is a dwarf. That immediately sent him on a further spiral, and it all led to Fergus’s biggest moment of the entire series at the end of Episode 3. Before we get into that, we need to understand why Fergus would even get to that point. Why is he so concerned about Henri-Christian?
Fergus worries about Henri-Christian’s future in Outlander
The concern for Fergus is in what’s to come as his son gets older. Jamie, Claire, Roger, Bree, everyone at the Ridge who isn’t superstitious can do all they can to protect Henri-Christian, but they’re not all going to be around forever. Fergus deals with his own mortality. He will die one day, and after that, he won’t be around to protect Henri-Christian.
Fergus has seen what life for a dwarf can be like. He saw how dwarves were “ordered” at the brothel. People would have “exotic” tastes. Even in death, there wasn’t peace. Doctors would buy the bodies of dwarves to show them off. If you’ve watched American Horror Story, Season 4 covers some of this and that was only set in the 1950s. Claire clearly lived a sheltered life because she should have known about that.
It’s understandable why Fergus is so concerned. He can’t be there for his son forever. He can offer Henri-Christian a good start in life, but that doesn’t mean others out there will do the right thing. It doesn’t mean that Henri-Christian will live a safe life once Fergus and Marsali have passed on. Everything that happened with the fisherfolk boys just leads to Fergus worrying even more.
