The Outlander Season 6 premiere introduced numerous storylines to look forward to throughout the season. One of them involves Fergus.

We knew that we’d see Marsali and Fergus face some darkness. Their season isn’t going to be as easy as it has been in the past, and that will mean we get to see more of Cesar Domboy on our screens. The Outlander Season 6 premiere made it clear that something is going on with Fergus, and it’s not good.

Fergus turned up drunk on numerous occasions. Jamie didn’t say anything at first, but it’s clear from Marsali’s words that she’s been handling this for a while and she’s getting to a point where she can’t cope any more.

What is going on with Fergus? Why is he getting drunk? What does this mean for his storyline throughout the season?

Fergus’s downward spiral in Outlander Season 6

Marsali shared a little with Claire about what’s going on. Fergus is struggling with shame. He wasn’t there to protect Marsali and Claire when they needed him. He partly blames himself for the abduction.

Of course, it’s not like Fergus could have done anything. He wasn’t to know Lionel Brown and his men were going to show up. He also wasn’t to know that they would knock Marsali out and abduct Claire. None of this is on him, but he is a man of the time. A wife being attacked is something that would shame a man back then.

We also see a little from Fergus about what’s going on in his mind. Lizzie makes a comment to Josiah Beardsley about two hands being better than one. Fergus comments that he only has one hand and he isn’t as useful. It’s a small comment that shows what he’s really thinking.

He’s struggling to cope with the loss of a limb. He can’t do the work that the men of his time can because he only has one hand. He views himself as inferior, and that is contributing to his downward spiral.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better for Fergus. This is going to be a difficult storyline to watch play out.
